Building Capacity Towards the fifth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 5), UNEP@50, and Stockholm+50

During 202 and 2021, and on assignment from the Civil Society Unit of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Stakeholder Forum delivered a series of online training webinars to build the capacity of UNEP Major Groups stakeholders to engage with UNEP and the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5).

The 2021 sessions included briefings on the 50th anniversary of UNEP – UNEP@50 – and Stockholm+50, a commemorative event to be held in Stockholm on 2 and 3 June 2022.

The fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5) was divided into two sessions rather than the usual single 5-day session.  Taking into account the exceptional circumstances associated with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, UNEA 5.1 was convened online in Nairobi, Kenya, on 22 and 23 February 2021, and was adjourned thereafter. UNEA 5.2 was resumed as a hybrid in-person meeting in Nairobi, Kenya from 28 February to 2 March 2022, followed by UNEP@50, held 3 – 4 March 2022. The theme for the special session was “Strengthening UNEP for the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
