|Evaluation of civil society participation in the 52nd Commission on Narcotic Drugs|
In June 1998 the UNGA held a Special Session (UNGASS) devoted to consideration of the world drug problem. The Political Declaration and Action Plans adopted by the UNGASS committed Member States to a set of ambitious targets in response to drug-related problems and a review of achievement 10 years after their adoption.
‘Beyond 2008’ was an initiative developed by the Vienna NGO Committee in partnership with the UNODC to provide a mechanism by which the voices of civil society would be able to contribute to the 10 year review. The global initiative spanned over two years, involved a questionnaire, reviews of the current status of the conventions and a series of regional consultations, and resulted in a three day Global Civil Society Forum (July 2008) where 300 NGOS agreed on a single set of resolutions.
